Waikiki Gum Disease Treatment and Maintenance by Dr. Stephen  R. Ho

Gum disease is the result of accumulated plaque and tartar that become lodged in the pockets of space between the teeth and the gums. Gum disease treatment in Waikiki by Dr. Stephen R. Ho will not only eradicate the disease and clean affected areas, but will also include maintenance cleanings to help prevent gum disease from returning. Through modern, effective deep cleaning methods, Dr. Ho and his dental team strive to keep your gums healthy to reinforce the durability of your bite and protect your overall health.

Understanding Gum Disease

There are three distinct stages of gum disease. Understanding what they are and how it affects your mouth will help you watch for signs at home and give you an idea of what comes next if the problem is not professionally treated. Because there is a significant link between gum disease and systemic health problems, treatment and maintenance become an important factor in your overall health.

Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the first and least severe stage of gum disease. Its symptoms include slight swelling and inflammation of the gums along with moderate sensitivity and bleeding. Gingivitis is reversible and can be effectively treated once identified.

Periodontitis
Periodontitis is the second stage of gum disease and is characterized by a recession in the gums to the extent where bone loss becomes possible. Periodontitis can be effectively treated through deep cleanings and antibiotic when applicable, but the damaged soft tissue will require continued maintenance cleanings to prevent the disease from returning.

Advanced Periodontitis
Advanced periodontitis, the final stage of gum disease, is characterized by the heightened and imminent presence or risk of tooth loss due to excessive gum deterioration. At the advanced periodontal stage, gums and bone are so weak that teeth may become loose and could potentially fall out.

Treatment for Gum Disease in Waikiki

The first line of preventive measures come from personal at-home care which provides sound oral hygiene, a healthy diet and the regular scheduling of professional cleanings. Once identified as having gum disease, the first defense is a deep cleaning to stop periodontitis in its tracks. Special professional techniques such as root planning, scaling and the application of antibiotic powders can be used to curtail the progression of the disease. To eliminate the risk of developing severe gum disease patients benefit from more frequent professional cleanings. The most severe cases are referred out to a gum specialist (periodontist).

Heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure have been linked to gum disease due to the harmful oral bacteria which enter the bloodstream through the gums when gum disease is present. These bacteria can damage the blood vessels leading into the heart, causing inflammation. In addition to heart disease, gum disease has also been shown to exacerbate other medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
